Set in Batavia (modern-day Jakarta) during the 1930s, the story revolves around the contrasting lives, ideals, and romantic entanglements of two sisters, Maria and Tuti, who represent two entirely different paths for the modern Indonesian woman.
Tuti is the elder sister. She is highly intellectual, serious, independent, and deeply active in women's emancipation organizations. She believes that women must break free from traditional shackles, pursue education, and avoid marrying simply for economic security or societal pressure. Because of her rigid idealism, she often appears cold and guarded regarding romance.
Maria is the younger sister. She is bubbly, emotional, cheerful, and views life with innocent optimism. Unlike Tuti, Maria is a romantic who embraces life through her feelings rather than intellectual theory.
The sisters' lives intersect with Yusuf, a bright, progressive medical student. Yusuf meets the sisters at an aquarium in Pasar Ikan and is instantly captivated by Maria’s warmth and vibrant energy. The two quickly fall deeply in love and become engaged, a relationship that Tuti observes with a mix of affection and philosophical skepticism.
