Kalau Tak Untung
The story centers on the deep, pure, and lifelong love between two childhood friends from a Minangkabau village: Rasmani, a gentle, intelligent, and highly dedicated schoolteacher, and Masrul, an ambitious and hardworking young man.
From a young age, the two share an unspoken emotional bond and a mutual understanding that they are destined to spend their lives together. However, as they grow into adulthood, the realities of their society begin to tear them apart. Masrul leaves the village to seek fortune and work in a different city, while Rasmani remains behind, pouring her heart into teaching young children and patiently waiting for his return.
Their dream of a shared future shatters when Masrul's family intervenes. Bound by the strict matrilineal traditions of the Minangkabau culture, Masrul is pressured by his mother and maternal uncle (ninik mamak) into an arranged marriage with a wealthy woman from his own social circle. Out of familial duty and filial piety, Masrul reluctantly yields to their demands, leaving Rasmani utterly heartbroken.
Rasmani bears her grief with immense dignity, channeling her sorrow into her work and refusing to marry anyone else. Meanwhile, Masrul's forced marriage quickly turns into an emotional disaster; his new wife is vain, materialistic, and completely incompatible with him, eventually leading to a painful divorce.
Free at last, Masrul realizes that his heart has always belonged to Rasmani. He frantically rushes back to their homeland to claim his true love. However, as the title Kalau Tak Untung somberly implies, fortune does not favor them. Right when happiness is finally within their grasp, a devastating illness or tragic twist of fate strikes, ensuring that their love can only ever be fulfilled in the afterlife.
