The story opens in colonial India, introducing Mary Lennox, a sickly, sour-tempered, and deeply neglected ten-year-old girl. Born to wealthy British parents who never wanted her, Mary is raised entirely by servants who pamper her every whim just to keep her out of her mother’s sight. As a result, Mary grows up intensely selfish, aggressive, and incapable of loving anyone.

Her life is violently upended when a catastrophic cholera outbreak sweeps through the estate, killing her parents and forcing the servants to flee in terror. Mary is left completely alone in the silent, dead house for days before British soldiers discover her.
