The story centers around Sophie Mercer, a sixteen-year-old girl who discovered she was a witch three years ago. Sophie was raised entirely by her human mother, completely detached from the magical world, and her track record with spellcasting is disastrous. When she tries to help a crying girl at her high school prom by casting a love spell, the magic goes horribly wrong, resulting in a public catastrophe that nearly exposes the existence of magic to the human world.

As a punishment and an intervention, Sophie’s estranged father—who happens to be the high-ranking head of the magical Council—exiles her to Hecate Hall (affectionately nicknamed "Hex Hall"). Located on a secluded island off the coast of Georgia, Hex Hall is a prestigious, high-security reform school for delinquent "Prodigium"—witches, warlocks, faeries, shapeshifters, and vampires who cannot control their powers.
