Henderson has been hired by five different assurance companies to look into a massive, highly suspicious claim: £25,000 (an absolute fortune at the time) on the life of the late wife of the sinister and brilliant Baron R___.

Madame R___ died after supposedly sleepwalking into her husband's private home laboratory and accidentally drinking a lethal bottle of acid. While the public and the courts accept it as a tragic accident, Henderson smells foul play.
