They Do it with Mirrors muslihat dengan cermin
Miss Jane Marple is visited by her old American friend, Ruth Van Rydock, who is deeply worried about her sister, Carrie Louise. Carrie Louise lives in a grand, sprawling Victorian estate called Stonygates with her eccentric, philanthropic third husband, Lewis Serrocold. Lewis has transformed the massive property into a rehabilitation center and school for delinquent teenage boys. Ruth cannot pinpoint exactly why, but she feels a subtle, suffocating sense of danger looming over her sister.
To investigate these vague fears, Miss Marple travels to Stonygates under the guise of an old school friend paying a casual visit. Upon her arrival, she finds herself in a highly chaotic and tense environment. The household is an bizarre mix of family members, suspicious assistants, and emotionally unstable young criminals.
The underlying tension explodes into violence when Christian Gulbrandsen—Carrie Louise’s stepson from her first marriage and a trustee of the family fortune—unexpectedly arrives at the estate. That very night, a staged argument breaks out in the office between Lewis Serrocold and a disgruntled youth, drawing the attention and ears of everyone in the house. While the household is distracted by the shouting and gunshots behind a locked door, a real, cold-blooded murder is committed in another wing of the house: Christian Gulbrandsen is found shot dead in his room.
With the local police utterly baffled by a house full of perfect alibis, it is up to Miss Marple to see through the grand illusion. She realizes that the killer has staged a brilliant theatrical performance, using the layout of the house and the psychology of the witnesses like a magician's trick—because just like an illusionist, they do it with mirrors.
