Hamlet
The story is set in the royal court of Denmark. Prince Hamlet is plunged into deep grief by the sudden death of his father, King Hamlet, and the shockingly hasty marriage of his mother, Queen Gertrude, to his uncle, Claudius.
The tragedy kicks into gear when the ghost of the late king appears to Hamlet, revealing a horrifying truth: he was not killed by a snake bite as reported, but was murdered by Claudius, who poured poison into his ear to seize the crown and the queen. The ghost demands that Hamlet exact revenge.
What follows is not a straightforward action story, but a complex psychological descent. Hamlet feigns madness ("antic disposition") to investigate and plan, but he becomes paralyzed by doubt. He constantly overthinks his actions: Is the ghost actually his father or a demon trying to damn his soul? Is Claudius truly guilty?
As Hamlet delays, his hesitation creates a ripple effect of chaos. He accidentally kills Polonius (the lord chamberlain), driving Polonius's daughter, Ophelia, to madness and tragic suicide, and alienating his beloved former friends. The play hurtles toward a devastating, bloody climax a fencing match orchestrated by Claudius and Laertes, where poisoned blades and a cup of poisoned wine result in the deaths of almost the entire royal family, including Gertrude, Claudius, Laertes, and Hamlet himself.
