Under The Greenwood Tree
Under the Greenwood Tree (subtitled The Mellstock Quire: A Rural Painting of the Dutch School) is a charming 1872 pastoral novel by English author Thomas Hardy. It is the second novel Hardy published and the first of his famous series of "Wessex novels," establishing the fictional rural world of Wessex that would anchor his later, more tragic masterpieces like Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Far from the Madding Crowd.
