PERANG BARATAYUDHA Perang Besar Pandawa dan Kurawa
The Baratayudha is the climactic, apocalyptic war in the Javanese shadow puppetry (wayang) tradition, adapted from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. It chronicles the ultimate 18-day fratricidal war fought on the sacred battlefield of Kurukshetra between two factions of the same royal lineage: the virtuous Pandavas (Pandawa) and their envious cousins, the Kauravas (Kurawa). The conflict is the culmination of decades of deep-seated rivalry, political greed, and the systemic humiliation of the Pandavas, who seek to reclaim their rightful kingdom of Hastinapura.
Rooted deeply in Javanese philosophy and cosmic order (Dharma), the Baratayudha is not merely a physical battle of weapons, but a spiritual war between good (kebajikan) and evil (kebatilan). Under the divine guidance of Lord Krishna, the Pandavas navigate devastating losses—including the deaths of beloved heroes, mentors, and children—before ultimately emerging victorious. The war results in the near-total annihilation of both armies, serving as a grim reminder of the destructive nature of ambition and the absolute inevitability of destiny and karma.
