Ken Arok & Ken Dedes
The story of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes is a monumental historical epic from 13th-century Java, chronicled in the ancient Javanese text Pararaton (The Book of Kings). It details the meteoric rise of Ken Arok, a charismatic street thief and orphan of divine lineage, who transforms into the founder and first ruler of the Singhasari Kingdom. His destiny becomes inextricably linked with Ken Dedes, a woman of extraordinary beauty and spiritual radiance (stri risi), who is prophesied to bring sovereign power and a lineage of kings to whomever marries her.
Driven by ambition and infatuation, Ken Arok assassinates Ken Dedes' husband, Tunggul Ametung—the ruler of Tumapel—using a cursed dagger forged by the legendary blacksmith Mpu Gandring. Ken Arok then claims both the throne and Ken Dedes as his queen. However, the cursed dagger initiates a bloody, multi-generational cycle of political assassinations and karmic retribution within the royal family. Despite the violence that birthed it, the union of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes successfully establishes a powerful dynasty that would later pave the way for the golden age of the Majapahit Empire.
