The Prophet
First published in 1923, The Prophet is a timeless masterpiece of philosophical fiction and prose poetry by Lebanese-American artist and philosopher Kahlil Gibran. The narrative follows a wise prophet named Almustafa, who has lived in the foreign city of Orphalese for twelve years and is finally about to board a ship to return to his homeland. Before he departs, a group of townspeople stops him, asking him to share his final words of wisdom on the core conditions of human existence.
Through 26 poetic essays, Almustafa addresses a wide array of universal topics prompted by the citizens, including love, marriage, children, giving, work, joy and sorrow, crime and punishment, freedom, and death. Gibran beautifully blends Eastern spiritualism with Western romanticism, delivering profound, mystical insights in simple yet deeply resonant language. The book offers a holistic guide to living a meaningful life, emphasizing that the divine can be found within everyday human experiences and through deeper connections with one another.
