The story centers on Masri, a young Minangkabau man who finds himself trapped in an unhappy, loveless marriage. Adhering to the rigid cultural traditions (adat) of his society, Masri's marriage was arranged by his family rather than built on mutual affection.

His life takes a dramatic turn when he unexpectedly crosses paths with a woman named Rasdiana. Unlike his wife, Rasdiana immediately captivates Masri's heart, and the two fall deeply in love. This "encounter" (pertemuan) sparks an intense internal and external conflict. Masri is caught in a painful tug-of-war between his deep-seated familial and societal obligations on one side, and his personal happiness and true romantic desires on the other.
