The Man from Archangel and Other Tales of Adventure
McVittie's treasured solitude is violently shattered during a ferocious night storm when a Russian schooner named the Archangel is shipwrecked on the rugged rocks near his home. Going down to investigate, he rescues the only apparent survivor: a beautiful young Russian woman named Sophie Ramusine. Because Sophie speaks no English, their communication is entirely non-verbal, but McVittie reluctantly tolerates her presence as she quietly respects his lonely habits.
The plot thickens a few days later when McVittie encounters a menacing, desperate Russian man named Ourganeff wandering the rugged shore. Ourganeff explains that he also survived the wreck and is looking for Sophie, whom he claims is his wife. When McVittie brings him to the cottage, Sophie is absolutely terrified and refuses to go with him. Ourganeff aggressively admits the truth—he actually kidnapped Sophie back in Russia out of an obsessive passion. Enraged, McVittie drives the kidnapper away at gunpoint.
