The story follows Morveren and her twin sister, Jenna, who live on a remote island that carries dark historical legends—specifically of a massive, ancient tidal wave that once swallowed entire halls and people. While the twins have always been close, their relationship is starting to drift and change like driftwood on a tide.
Everything shifts after a fierce ocean storm. While exploring the local sand dunes and rock pools, Morveren discovers a beautiful, half-buried teenage boy named Malin. When she rushes to rescue him, she is shocked to realize he isn't human at all—he is a Mer boy from the deep ocean world of Ingo, completely stranded on land.

Morveren is determined to protect him and nurse him back to health so he can return to his people. However, Jenna initially refuses to accept the magical truth of what they've found. Morveren finds herself completely isolated at the worst possible time, struggling to keep Malin hidden.
