The story introduces us to Elizabeth Allen, a spoiled, stubborn, and incredibly wealthy only child. Elizabeth has a fierce temper and is used to getting absolutely everything she wants. When her parents finally run out of patience with her unruly behavior, they decide to send her away to a co-educational boarding school called Whyteleafe School.

Furious at her parents, Elizabeth makes a firm, stubborn vow to herself: she will become the absolute naughtiest girl the school has ever seen so that the headmistress will have no choice but to expel her and send her right back home.

From her very first day at Whyteleafe, Elizabeth goes completely out of her way to be bad. She behaves rudely to her teachers, plays mischievous pranks, speaks back during meetings, and deliberately refuses to make friends.
