I Think I'll Just Curl Up and Die
The story follows Alice McKinley, an eleven-year-old girl who is about to enter the sixth grade. Alice lives with her loving but entirely male-dominated family: her sweet, slightly clueless father, Ben, and her nineteen-year-old brother, Lester. Alice’s mother died of cancer when Alice was just a toddler, leaving her with no memory of her and, crucially, no older female figure to guide her through the confusing world of growing up.
Alice is convinced that her life is an endless parade of absolute humiliation. Lacking a mother to teach her social cues, fashion, or how to navigate bodily changes, Alice finds herself constantly stumbling into deeply embarrassing situations—the "agonies" of the title.
Desperate to become a poised, sophisticated, and "perfect" woman, Alice sets out on a mission to find a mother figure to copy. She sets her sights on Miss Cole, the gorgeous, trendy, and incredibly popular sixth-grade teacher. Alice expects to be placed in Miss Cole's class, viewing it as her ticket to becoming elegant and flawless.
