Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and Timothy the dog are on holiday at the coastal cottage of an elderly gentleman named Mr. Croft. There, they meet a spoiled and lonely young boy named Wilfrid, who has an extraordinary, almost magical ability to charm wild animals.

Right off the coast lies Whispering Island (the "Pulau Seram" of the Indonesian title). The island has a dark and eerie reputation: it is strictly guarded, locals refuse to go near it, and statues of modern men are rumored to stand among the ancient woods.
