The Famous Five—Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and Timothy the dog—head to the rugged coast of Cornwall for a peaceful autumn holiday. They stay at Tremannon Farm, a beautiful old cliffside property managed by the friendly Mrs. Penruthlan and her brooding, seemingly silent husband.

The children quickly immerse themselves in the local history and learn about the dark past of the Cornwall coast, which used to be plagued by wreckers—criminals who used false light signals to trick passing ships into crashing against the sharp rocks so they could steal the cargo.

The mystery begins when the local parson shares a rumor: someone is using the old wrecker methods again, flashing lights from the cliffs on stormy nights to signal to ships out at sea. The children suspect that a modern smuggling ring is operating right under everyone's noses.

Their investigation deepens when a traveling troupe of entertainers, the Barnies, arrives to perform in the farm's old barn. Among them is Yan, a ragged local boy who follows the Five everywhere and takes a great liking to Timmy.
