The Famous Five—Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and Timothy the dog—are excited to return to Kirrin Cottage for the summer holidays. However, their joy is short-lived. Aunt Fanny has fallen seriously ill and has been taken to a hospital in the city, and Uncle Quentin has gone with her.

In their absence, the house is left under the care of a temporary housekeeper, Mrs. Stick, who brings along her lazy husband, her obnoxious son Edgar, and their miserable, mangy dog, Tinker. The Sticks quickly make the children's lives a living hell: they cook terrible food, treat the children with hostility, and Mrs. Stick threatens to poison Timmy after he bites Edgar.

Realizing they are no longer safe or welcome in Kirrin Cottage, George decides to take a boat out to her private sanctuary, Kirrin Island, to live off the land. The rest of the cousins enthusiastically agree to join her. They pack up provisions, blankets, and a tent, and secretly row away in the dead of night to camp on the island.
