The Famous Five—Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and Timothy the dog—are spending their holidays living independently in two rented, old-fashioned horse caravans parked on a hillside.

Their peaceful camping holiday gets much livelier when a traveling fair moves into the same field. At first, the fair folk are hostile toward the children, but the Five quickly win them over after Timmy rescues a mischievous little monkey named Mischief. The children become fast friends with Jo, the fiery gypsy girl (from Five Fall Into Adventure), who happens to be traveling with the fair.

The real mystery begins when the children look across the valley at the majestic, ruined Faynights Castle. The castle is strictly closed to the public and is being rented out by a reclusive, eccentric scientist (the "mysterious scholar" of the Indonesian title) who is supposedly conducting secret research.

Things take a dark turn when the children spot a desperate face looking out from a high, barred window in the castle tower. Soon after, they discover that a prominent, top-secret government scientist has gone missing, and rumor has it he was kidnapped to prevent him from sharing his research.

Convinced the missing scientist is being held captive inside Faynights Castle, the Five try to investigate, but the castle is heavily guarded by ruthless men and fierce guard dogs. To save the day, the Five must team up with Jo and the fair folk. Using the circus performers' unique talents, a hidden key, and a secret underground entrance known only to the gypsies, they launch a daring rescue mission inside the castle walls.
