Illegal Alien
This is a highly acclaimed, Hugo-nominated legal thriller that uses a classic alien-invasion premise to explore deep questions about justice, prejudice, and ethics.
Synopsis:
The novel begins with the arrival of the Tosoks, an advanced extraterrestrial race that lands on Earth with a message of peace and a promise to share technology that could cure diseases and solve the energy crisis. However, the diplomatic mission is shattered when one of the lead Tosok scientists is found standing over the dead body of a prominent human author.
The alien is arrested and put on trial in a Los Angeles court. The narrative plays out as a gripping courtroom drama where the defense attorney, Dale Rice, must defend an alien defendant whose biology, psychology, and moral code are fundamentally different from humans. The book is a sharp critique of the American legal system and social bias, forcing the reader to consider: If we cannot even understand the "alien" in our own society, how could we possibly hope to understand visitors from another world?
