The story begins with the classic Enid Blyton adventure setup: the Famous Five (Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and their dog, Timmy) are excited for a hiking holiday. However, things take an unexpected turn when an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease forces them to change their plans and hike in a completely different area.

While on their hike, they encounter a series of strange events, including a missing boy, suspicious characters, and a mysterious, deserted railway track. The "haunted" aspect of the title (or the "Ghost Train" theme) stems from rumors and strange occurrences involving old, abandoned railway infrastructure that seems to be utilized for illicit activities. As always, the Five find themselves stumbling into a dangerous criminal plot, and they must rely on their collective bravery, observation skills, and—of course—Timmy’s loyalty to uncover the truth.
