The novel opens in a sordid Parisian tavern called The Poivrière. Three men have been murdered. A young, unknown police agent named Monsieur Lecoq arrives at the crime scene before the famous Inspector Gevrol.

While Gevrol dismisses the case as a simple drunken brawl, Lecoq sees clues everyone else misses: footprints in the snow, a scrap of torn paper, the position of the bodies. He realizes this was no brawl – it was a carefully planned triple murder.
