Don Quixote
The story follows Alonso Quixano, a middle-aged Spanish country gentleman who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind. Convinced he is a heroic knight-errant destined to revive chivalry and protect the helpless, he renames himself Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Decked out in a rusty, mismatched suit of armor and riding a scrawny old horse named Rocinante, he recruits a simple, pragmatic peasant named Sancho Panza to be his loyal squire. Fuelled by romantic ideals, Don Quixote rides out across the plains of La Mancha to right wrongs and fight evil—most famously tilting at windmills, which he hallucinates are vicious giants. Throughout their travels, the well-meaning knight causes chaos and gets beaten up repeatedly, while the increasingly fond Sancho acts as his grounded voice of reason, though he is occasionally swept up in his master's delusions.
