The Count of Monte Cristo The Count of Monte Cristo
The story follows Edmond Dantès, a young, handsome, and fiercely loyal first mate who seems to have the world at his feet: he is about to be made captain of his ship and is happily engaged to the beautiful Mercédès.
However, his bright future is stolen away by jealousy. Driven by petty envy, three men—Fernand (who loves Mercédès), Danglars (who wants Dantès's job as captain), and a cowardly magistrate named Villefort—conspire to frame Dantès for treason. On the very day of his wedding, Dantès is arrested and thrown without a trial into the nightmarish island prison of the Château d'If.
After enduring fourteen brutal years of isolation, Dantès meets a brilliant fellow prisoner, the Abbé Faria, who educates him, teaches him languages, sciences, and swordplay, and eventually reveals the location of a vast, hidden treasure on the island of Monte Cristo. When Faria dies, Dantès makes a daring escape by sewing himself into the abbe's burial shroud and casting himself into the sea.
