Northanger Abbey
The story follows Catherine Morland, a young, imaginative, and delightfully naive seventeen-year-old from a large, unpretentious family. Unlike the typical tragic heroines of gothic romances, Catherine is neither tragically poor nor uncommonly gifted; she simply loves reading gothic novels like Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho.
Invited by wealthy family friends, the Allens, to visit the fashionable spa town of Bath, Catherine is thrilled to experience the world outside her quiet country home. There, she is befriended by the sensible and witty Henry Tilney—with whom she quickly falls in love—and his manipulative, ambitious friend John Thorpe.
Later, Henry’s father, the imposing and materialistic General Tilney, invites Catherine to stay at his ancestral home, Northanger Abbey. Having spent months reading spooky tales of dark deeds and hidden secrets, Catherine’s overactive imagination runs wild. Convinced that the Abbey is hiding a dark mystery and that the General murdered his late wife, she sneaks around the house looking for clues—only to be caught red-handed by Henry. Heartbroken and mortified, Catherine realizes that the real world is governed by mundane human flaws like greed and social snobbery, rather than evil villains and haunted chambers. She is sent home in disgrace, but maturity, realism, and a chastened Henry Tilney eventually pave the way for a happy resolution.
