Madame Bovary
The story follows Emma Rouault, a beautiful country girl who grows up reading romantic, sentimental novels filled with passionate heroes, luxurious châteaux, and sweeping emotional highs. When she marries Charles Bovary, a well-meaning but dull and unimaginative country doctor, Emma expects her marriage to instantly transport her into that glamorous, transcendent fantasy world.
Instead, reality sets in quickly. Living in the quiet, provincial town of Yonville, Emma finds her domestic life stiflingly mundane and boring. Charles adores her, but he is entirely blind to her emotional turmoil. Desperate to escape her drab existence and experience the grand passions she read about in books, Emma embarks on a series of turbulent extramarital affairs—first with a smooth-talking law clerk named Léon, and later with a wealthy, cynical landowner named Rodolphe.
To fund her lovers, her desire for luxury, and expensive gifts, Emma secretly borrows heavily from a greedy merchant, sinking deeper and deeper into catastrophic debt. When her lovers ultimately abandon her and the debts become insurmountable, the bank seizes her possessions. Facing total social ruin and public humiliation, Emma consumes arsenic and dies a slow, agonizing death. Brokenhearted and financially ruined, Charles discovers the truth about her affairs and debt, dying soon after, leaving their young daughter orphaned.
