Nicholas Nickelby
The story begins with tragedy: upon the death of his father, nineteen-year-old Nicholas Nickleby, his mother, and his sensitive sister, Kate, are left penniless. They turn to their uncle, Ralph Nickleby, a cold, greedy, and callous London moneylender, for help.
Instead of offering genuine support, Ralph treats them as a burden. He ruthlessly separates the family, sending Nicholas off to Yorkshire to work as a lowly, underpaid assistant at Dotheboys Hall, a notoriously brutal boarding school run by the sadistic, one-eyed Wackford Squeers.
At Dotheboys Hall, Nicholas witnesses firsthand the horrific abuse, starvation, and neglect suffered by the unwanted children left in Squeers' care. Driven by a fierce sense of justice, Nicholas finally snaps when Squeers physically beats Smike, a gentle, crippled drudge and orphan living at the school. Nicholas thrashes Squeers soundly, abandons the school forever, and takes Smike with him.
Thus begins a grand journey of survival, loyalty, and redemption. Nicholas and Smike wander England, eventually finding refuge and a makeshift "family" among a colorful troupe of traveling actors managed by the eccentric Mr. Crummles. Meanwhile, back in London, Nicholas must protect his sister Kate from Ralph’s predatory, wealthy business associates. As the story unfolds, secrets are revealed, villains receive their just rewards, and Nicholas works tirelessly to rebuild a safe, loving home for his family and his loyal friend Smike.
