Pride and Prejudice
The story is set in rural England and follows the Bennet family, which consists of a nervous, status-obsessed mother, a dryly sarcastic father, and five unmarried daughters. Because of historical inheritance laws, their estate is entailed away to a pompous distant cousin, meaning the daughters must marry well to secure their futures.
The plot kicks into gear when the wealthy, amiable Mr. Charles Bingley leases a nearby estate, instantly capturing the attention of the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane. At a local ball, Bingley’s close friend, the fabulously wealthy and aloof Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, refuses to dance with the second-eldest daughter, Elizabeth Bennet, haughtily declaring her merely "tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me."
Hearing this insult wounds Elizabeth’s sharp intellect and pride, planting an immediate prejudice against Darcy. Meanwhile, Darcy gradually finds himself drawn to Elizabeth’s lively wit and fine eyes.
As the story unfolds, a series of misunderstandings, bad advice, and disastrous social blunders keep them apart. Darcy proposes to Elizabeth in a disastrously arrogant manner, which she angrily rejects. However, after Darcy writes a candid letter explaining his past actions, and after he secretly intervenes to save the Bennet family from a catastrophic social scandal caused by Elizabeth’s runaway younger sister Lydia, Elizabeth realizes how wrong she was about him. Stripped of their mutual pride and prejudice, the two finally recognize their deep compatibility and find their way to a joyful union, alongside Jane and Bingley.
