Mrs Dalloway
The novel follows Clarissa Dalloway, a well-to-do upper-class woman in her early fifties, as she walks through London preparing to host a grand party that evening. Throughout the day, external events—buying flowers, hearing a car engine backfire, striking clocks—trigger deep internal waves of memory, forcing Clarissa to reflect on her past choices: her youth in Bourton, her rejection of a passionate suitor named Peter Walsh, and her decision instead to marry the reliable, conventional Richard Dalloway.
Running parallel to Clarissa’s day is the tragic story of Septimus Warren Smith, a young World War I veteran suffering from severe shell shock (PTSD) and hallucinations. Shunned and misunderstood by the rigid medical establishment of the time, Septimus feels completely alienated from a society that wants to sweep the trauma of the war under the rug.
Though Clarissa and Septimus never actually meet, their lives collide when news of Septimus's suicide—by jumping out a window to escape institutionalization—reaches Clarissa during her evening party. Rather than dampening the festivities, the news profoundly affects her, prompting a sudden, piercing realization of mortality, the preciousness of life, and the deep, invisible connections between human beings.
