The Mysterious Island
The story begins during the American Civil War in 1865, when a small group of Union prisoners escapes from Richmond, Virginia, by hijacking a hot-air balloon. The daring escapees include the brilliant engineer and leader Cyrus Smith, his loyal former slave Neb, the sailor Pencroff, the young orphan Harbert, and the journalist Gideon Spilett, accompanied by Pencroff's dog, Top.
A ferocious hurricane blows the balloon wildly off course for days before crashing it onto a remote, uncharted volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean. Stripped of everything except the clothes on their backs, the castaways must rely entirely on their wits, science, and teamwork to survive.
Led by Cyrus Smith's encyclopedic knowledge of chemistry, physics, and mechanics, the men transform from helpless survivors into master builders. They forge iron, manufacture tools, build a sophisticated cliffside dwelling called "Lincolnestown," harness electricity, and domesticate the wilderness.
However, they soon realize they are not alone. Strange, inexplicable events keep happening: objects are moved, lost items are mysteriously returned, and lives are saved by an unseen benefactor. The ultimate secret of the island—and the identity of their mysterious guardian—leads to a breathtaking convergence with the lore of Captain Nemo and the Nautilus, culminating in a race against time before a volcanic eruption destroys their hard-built home.
