Utopia
Utopia (fully titled De Optimo Reipublicae Statu deque Nova Insula Utopia, or On the Best State of a Commonwealth and on the New Island of Utopia) is a foundational work of philosophy, socio-political satire, and fiction written in Latin by Sir Thomas More and published in 1516. The book is divided into two distinct parts: Book I, a sharp critique of contemporary European socio-economic and political ills (particularly in Tudor England), and Book II, a detailed description of life on an ideal, fictional island society.
The title itself has become a permanent part of the global lexicon, coined by More from the Greek words ou-topos (meaning "no-place") and eutopos (meaning "good place"), highlighting the delicate paradox of an ideal society that does not exist.
