The Sonnets
Shakespeare's Sonnets is a collection of 154 poems written by William Shakespeare on a wide variety of themes, dealing with love, beauty, politics, the passage of time, and mortality. First published in 1609 (though many were written years earlier), the collection is one of the most celebrated and analyzed works of lyric poetry in the English language.
Unlike traditional Renaissance love poetry that praised an unattainable, angelic woman (a convention popularized by Petrarch), Shakespeare subverted expectations by exploring complex, deeply raw, and sometimes scandalous human emotions.
