The play opens in Scotland, where the brave Scottish general Macbeth and his loyal companion Banquo encounter three mysterious witches on a lonely heath after a victorious battle. The witches make a startling prophecy: Macbeth will be named Thane of Cawdor and eventually King of Scotland, while Banquo’s descendants will inherit the throne.

Shortly after, royal messengers arrive to announce that King Duncan has indeed bestowed the title of Thane of Cawdor upon Macbeth. Struck by the sudden fulfillment of the first prophecy, ambition takes root in Macbeth's mind. He writes a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, detailing the supernatural encounter. Fiercely ambitious and ruthless, Lady Macbeth immediately resolves to push her hesitant husband toward seizing the crown by any means necessary.
