A Midsummer Night's Dream
The play is set in ancient Athens and begins with preparations for the upcoming wedding of Theseus, Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons. Amidst the court, an Athenian nobleman named Egeus brings a severe grievance before the Duke: his daughter, Hermia, refuses to marry Demetrius (the man Egeus has chosen for her) because she is deeply in love with Lysander. Under Athenian law, Egeus demands that Hermia obey him or face death or exile to a nunnery.
Desperate, Hermia and Lysander plan to elope by fleeing into the enchanted forest outside the city walls. They confide their plan to Helena, Hermia’s heartbroken friend who is desperately in love with Demetrius. Hoping to win Demetrius's affection, Helena betrays the secret and tells him about their flight. That night, all four young lovers stumble into the dark, mysterious woods, closely pursued by a furious Demetrius and a lovelorn Helena.
