Persuasion
The novel follows Anne Elliot, the sensible, intelligent, and overlooked twenty-nine-year-old daughter of Sir Walter Elliot, a vain and haughty baronet who cares above all else about social status and physical appearance.
Eight years earlier, Anne fell deeply in love with Captain Frederick Wentworth, a handsome, ambitious young naval officer with no fortune or family connections. Persuaded by her wise family friend, Lady Russell, Anne broke off the engagement, believing that marrying a penniless sailor would be imprudent and beneath her social standing. Captain Wentworth, heartbroken and feeling rejected, went off to sea, where he distinguished himself in the Napoleonic Wars, earned a massive fortune in prize money, and rose to the rank of captain.
