A Little Princess
The story opens in Victorian London and follows Sara Crewe, a deeply imaginative, intelligent, and extraordinarily wealthy seven-year-old girl. Sara has been raised in India by her doting, widowed father, Captain Ralph Crewe. Because her mother passed away when she was a baby, Sara and her father share an exceptionally close, devoted bond.
Captain Crewe enrolls Sara as a boarder at Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies, a prestigious London boarding school. Before leaving her in England to return to his diamond mines in India, Captain Crewe spares no expense, outfitting Sara with the finest dresses, a private carriage, a dedicated personal maid, and a luxurious suite of rooms.
Although Sara is treated like a pampered "little princess" by the obsequious headmistress Miss Minchin, Sara remains remarkably unpretentious, kindhearted, and generous. She uses her wealth to befriend the other girls—including the slow-witted and timid orphan Ermengarde St. John and Lottie Leigh, a temperamental toddler—and wins the fierce loyalty of Becky, the overworked, exhausted scullery maid. Sara’s greatest gift is her boundless imagination; she loves telling elaborate, magical stories that captivate her classmates.
