Othello
The play is set in Venice and Cyprus. Othello, a brilliant and respected Moorish general in the Venetian army, has secretly married Desdemona, the beautiful young daughter of a prominent Venetian senator, Brabantio. When Brabantio discovers the marriage, he publicly accuses Othello of using witchcraft or deceit to win his daughter's heart. However, Othello eloquently defends himself before the Venetian Duke, and Desdemona confirms her genuine love for her husband, forcing Brabantio to drop the charges.
Meanwhile, a bitter and resentful ensign named Iago harbors a deep hatred for Othello. Iago is furious because Othello passed him over for a military promotion, giving it to the inexperienced Michael Cassio instead, and because he harbors unverified suspicions that both Othello and Cassio have wronged him personally. Driven by pure malice, Iago vows to exact a terrible revenge on Othello, telling his wealthy and gullible dupe, Roderigo: "I am not what I am."
