The Winter's Tale
The play begins in the royal court of Sicilia, where King Leontes and his childhood friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia, have been joyfully reunited after a nine-month visit. Polixenes prepares to return home, but despite his wife Hermione's sincere and polite pleas—and Polixenes's own reluctance to leave—he agrees to stay a little longer at Leontes's insistence.
Suddenly, without any rational warning, Leontes is consumed by a violent, blinding fit of jealousy. He becomes utterly convinced that Hermione and Polixenes are having a secret affair and that Hermione’s unborn child is illegitimate. Blinded by paranoia, Leontes orders his loyal lord, Camillo, to poison Polixenes. Instead, Camillo warns Polixenes of the plot, and the two men flee secretly to Bohemia under the cover of night.
