Wuthering Heights
The novel is set against the dark, isolated backdrop of the Yorkshire moors and is framed as a tale told by the housekeeper, Nelly Dean, to a new tenant named Mr. Lockwood.
The story begins years earlier when Mr. Earnshaw, the owner of the remote estate Wuthering Heights, travels to Liverpool and returns home with a starving, dark-haired homeless orphan boy whom he names Heathcliff. Mr. Earnshaw showers the boy with affection, which breeds intense jealousy and resentment in his biological son, Hindley. However, Mr. Earnshaw’s daughter, Catherine, forms an immediate, fierce, and unbreakable bond with Heathcliff, and the two grow up roaming the wild moors together as soulmates.
Following Mr. Earnshaw's death, Hindley inherits Wuthering Heights. Seeking cruel revenge for the favor his father showed Heathcliff, Hindley reduces Heathcliff to the status of a common, abused farm laborer, stripping him of education and dignity. Despite the abuse, Catherine and Heathcliff remain inseparable, finding freedom on the moors far away from Hindley's cruelty.
