The Jungle Books
The narrative centers on Mowgli, an Indian boy who, as a toddler, escapes from the clutches of Shere Khan, a fierce, man-eating Bengal tiger, during a jungle hunt. The child wanders into the territory of a wolf pack in the Seonee hills.
Mother Wolf adopts the human toddler—whom she names Mowgli (meaning "The Frog")—and raises him alongside her own cubs. When the pack gathers at Council Rock, Akela, the pack leader, accepts Mowgli into the family. Two powerful mentors step forward to protect and educate the human cub: Baloo, the sleepy brown bear who teaches him the Law of the Jungle, and Bagheera, the sleek, cunning black panther who purchases Mowgli's life with a freshly killed bull.
As Mowgli grows up, he learns the language of all jungle creatures, but he eventually becomes a target for Shere Khan, who resents the wolf pack for protecting a human. When an aging Akela misses a kill and loses his authority, the young wolves turn against Mowgli under Shere Khan's influence. Realizing he no longer belongs safely with his wolf family, Mowgli uses fire—which all animals fear—to drive off Shere Khan and vows to return one day with the tiger's skin. He leaves the jungle to live in a human village.
