The Iliad
The epic poem is set during the final, tenth year of the legendary Trojan War. The Greek (Achaean) army is camped outside the walls of Troy, fighting to rescue Helen, the wife of King Menelaus, who was abducted by the Trojan prince Paris.
The story centers on Achilles, the greatest and fiercest warrior of the Greek army. Early in the campaign, a bitter dispute erupts between Achilles and Agamemnon, the arrogant commander-in-chief of the Greek forces. Agamemnon is forced by the gods to surrender his captive, Chryseis, to appease the god Apollo. In retaliation for his wounded pride, Agamemnon aggressively seizes Briseis, a war captive assigned to Achilles as a prize of honor.
Furious at the insult, Achilles withdraws his fierce Myrmidon warriors from the fighting, refuses to lift another sword for the Greek cause, and prays to his divine mother, the sea-goddess Thetis, to punish the Greeks so they will realize how desperately they need him.
