Great Expectations

Charles Dickens - Personal Name;

The story is set in mid-19th-century England and is narrated by Pip (Philip Pirrip), an orphan raised by his abusive, sharp-tongued older sister and her kindhearted husband, the humble village blacksmith Joe Gargery.

While visiting the lonely churchyard marshes as a young boy, Pip has a terrifying encounter with Abel Magwitch, an escaped convict who forces Pip to steal food and a metal file under threat of death. Pip obeys, but feels immense guilt. Shortly after, the convict is recaptured and shipped off to a penal colony in Australia.

As he grows older, Pip is sent to work as an apprentice blacksmith. However, his life changes forever when he is hired to visit Satis House, the gloomy, decaying estate of Miss Havisham, a wealthy, eccentric spinster who was jilted at the altar decades ago and has lived ever since in her yellowed wedding dress amid rotting wedding cake. There, Pip meets Estella, Miss Havisham’s stunning, proud, and emotionally cold adopted daughter. Pip falls instantly and desperately in love with her, though Estella treats him with cruel disdain, mocking his low social standing and coarse hands.

Years later, a London lawyer named Mr. Jaggers arrives with astonishing news: Pip has come into a "great expectation." An anonymous benefactor has provided a massive fortune for Pip to be taken away from the forge, educated in London, and raised as a gentleman. Thrilled, Pip assumes that his secret benefactor is Miss Havisham, and that she intends for him to marry Estella.
