Pride and Prejudice
The novel opens in the English countryside with the Bennet family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their five unmarried daughters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. Mrs. Bennet’s sole obsession in life is finding wealthy husbands for all her girls.
Excitement ripples through the neighborhood when Mr. Charles Bingley, a wealthy, amiable, and charming young bachelor, rents the nearby estate of Netherfield. At a local ball, Bingley instantly falls in love with the gentle and beautiful Jane Bennet.
However, Bingley’s close friend—Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, a vastly wealthy, aristocratic landowner—causes immediate offense. Proud, aloof, and disdainful of local society, Darcy refuses to dance with Elizabeth Bennet, loudly declaring within her earshot that she is merely "tolerable, but not handsome enough to tempt me." This stinging insult sparks Elizabeth’s intense, long-lasting prejudice against Darcy.
