A Midsummer Night's Dream
The play is set in ancient Athens and opens just days before the grand wedding of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, and Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons.
Amidst the celebratory preparations, a desperate nobleman named Egeus storms into court with his daughter, Hermia, and two young suitors: Lysander and Demetrius. Egeus demands that Hermia marry Demetrius, but Hermia is passionately in love with Lysander. When Hermia refuses her father’s command, Theseus gives her an ultimatum: she must either marry Demetrius, face execution, or become a nun in Diana's convent.
Refusing to bow to tyrannical law, Hermia and Lysander hatch a secret plan to flee Athens that very night, escaping into the nearby enchanted forest where Athenian law cannot touch them.
Before they leave, Hermia confides their plan to her dear friend Helena. Helena is deeply in love with Demetrius, but Demetrius completely spurns her and pursues Hermia instead. Desperate to win Demetrius's favor by revealing the secret, Helena tells him about the elopement, and all four young lovers stumble out into the dark, magical woods.
