Hamlet
The play is set in the royal court of Denmark at Elsinore Castle. The nation is in mourning following the sudden death of King Hamlet. In an unsettling turn of events, the late king’s brother, Claudius, has seized the throne and hastily married his widowed sister-in-law, Gertrude.
Prince Hamlet, the late king's son, is plunged into deep, consuming grief and bitter disgust over his mother's rushed and incestuous marriage.
Late one night, the castle guards and Hamlet's loyal friend Horatio summon the prince to the castle ramparts, where they have seen a phantom bearing the exact likeness of the late King Hamlet. When Hamlet confronts the ghost, the apparition reveals a horrifying truth: he was not killed by a snakebite as reported, but was murdered by Claudius, who poured poison into his ear while he slept. The ghost demands that Hamlet exact bloody revenge upon the usurping king, though he warns Hamlet to leave Queen Gertrude to the judgment of heaven.
