Macbeth
The play opens on the wild, misty Scottish moors, where three mysterious witches (the Weird Sisters) prophesy that Macbeth, a brave and loyal Scottish general, will soon become Thane of Cawdor and eventually King of Scotland. They also prophesy to Macbeth’s companion, Banquo, that he will not be king himself, but that his descendants will inherit the Scottish throne.
Shortly after, royal messengers arrive to announce that King Duncan has bestowed the title of Thane of Cawdor upon Macbeth, confirming the first part of the witches' prediction. Struck by ambition, Macbeth writes to his wife, Lady Macbeth, detailing the prophecy. Lady Macbeth is fiercely ambitious and fears her husband is "too full o' the milk of human kindness" to seize the crown by force, so she immediately resolves to push him toward murder.
