The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
A Synopsis of L. Frank Baum’s Classic American Fairy Tale
The Cyclone and Munchkin Country
The story begins on a bleak, gray Kansas prairie where young Dorothy Gale lives an ordinary life with her aunt, uncle, and her beloved little dog, Toto.
One afternoon, a sudden and terrifying cyclone strikes the farm. While her aunt and uncle rush into the storm cellar, Dorothy is trapped inside the house just as the cyclone lifts the entire wooden structure high up into the air, carrying her away on a fantastic journey across the clouds.
The house eventually lands with a heavy thud in a country of breathtaking beauty, filled with gorgeous flowers, lush green trees, and cheerful, brightly dressed people known as Munchkins. The fallen house has accidentally landed directly on, and instantly crushed, the Wicked Witch of the East.
Grateful for their liberation from tyranny, the local inhabitants and the Good Witch of the North greet Dorothy. The Good Witch gifts Dorothy the magical silver shoes worn by the dead witch, and advises Dorothy that her only hope of returning home to Kansas is to travel along the yellow brick road to the Emerald City and ask for help from the great and powerful Wizard of Oz.
