Romeo and Juliet
The play is set in the sun-drenched Italian city of Verona, which is torn apart by a bitter, generational blood feud between two noble families: the Capulets and the Montagues. Street brawls between the houses have become so frequent that the ruler of Verona, Prince Escalus, issues a strict decree: any further public fighting will be punished by death.
Meanwhile, Romeo, the young son and heir of the Montague family, is lovesick and depressed, pining over an unrequited crush named Rosaline. To cheer him up, his cousin Benvolio and his flamboyant friend Mercutio persuade Romeo to sneak in disguise into a grand masked ball being hosted by their sworn enemies, the House of Capulet.
At the ball, Romeo forgets Rosaline the instant he lays eyes on Juliet, the thirteen-year-old daughter of the Capulets. Juliet is equally captivated. They share a brief, poetic conversation and kiss, discovering only afterward that they belong to rival families. That night, Romeo lingers outside the Capulet orchard and overhears Juliet standing on her balcony, professing her deep love for him despite his surname ("O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?"). Romeo steps from the shadows, and the two impulsively vow to marry.
