The story centers on a wealthy merchant who lives in a bustling port city with his children. He has three vain, proud daughters and one exceptionally kind, beautiful, and selfless youngest daughter named Belle (meaning "beauty").

The family’s fortunes vanish overnight when all of the merchant's trading ships are lost at sea. Stripped of their wealth, the family is forced to move out of the city into a modest, rustic cottage in the countryside, where Belle works hard, reads books cheerfully, and adapts to poverty, while her older sisters whine and waste away in self-pity.
